The other day I wrote about the email from Nigeria, which turned out to be a failed phishing expedition originating from this [196.1.176.194] IP address. From what I learnt later, someone sent emails to the victim asking him to update his email information on Yahoo as well as Hotmail accounts otherwise they’d be terminated.
Sounds familiar, right? It was almost a successful phishing expedition, since the scammer got his username, password for both accounts and of course hundreds of email address of his contacts.
That solved the puzzle I had on how did they got all these email addresses when I first received that fake email then confirmed that some of my friends who knew him also received the same email.
What happened to him was, after he received that threaten emails, he had followed their suggestions, updated all his personal information at the links they have provided in the emails, and the next thing he knew, he could not log in to his email accounts anymore. Since he has so many contacts across the globe, then he started to receive inquiries from all his friends following the daylight in each continent. He started to get phone call from the US, Russia, European countries as well as people from his own country. Wouldn’t it be horrible if some unlucky folks had simply followed the instruction of the scammer and sent money to the address in Nigeria?
As I mentioned in my previous post, using this search words of Fighting racism, hiv/aids and poverty scam, you may find almost the same stories over and over again along the list. For example this morning I found the same story in the New York Times. Hope this will alert us about the danger of phishing.

Be careful with your data. No matter how secure the system, once it is uploaded to the Internet – vast computing system, it will remain in the ‘cloud’. So many bad people will try to exploit the system.
This post remind me on The Net – Sandra Bullock, the movie.
