The Best Medicine

That was the title of an article that appeared in March-April 2008 Issue of AARP Magazine. Yes, I’m young enough to have my name in AARP list,
but No, I didn’t receive this one directly from AARP since usually any mail from AARP will fall into the pail of junk mails that will go directly to my trash bag. (Sorry AARP) I receive this one from an associate in Atlanta, and the title caught my attention. You still can find this article in AARP Magazine site.
Coming from a family with history of cancer, I’ve always paid special attention to anything that would show any hope on preventing cancer. I’ve taken isotonic antioxidant, particularly OPC-3 since a friend introduced its benefits as potent free radical scavenger/antioxidant few years ago. Since then I’ve found many references as well as anecdotal testimonials on the Internet including those video in youtube concerning the benefits of OPC-3. A search using ‘pycnogenol’ in pubmed site while composing this post for example resulted in 152 entries from various medical peer reviewed journals. Scanning through the result of using ‘OPC cancer’ in the same site, I came across this reference and found the full article on the anticancer effect of OPC on human collorectal cancer cell line. Since I am not a medical professional, I could not tell you the details of all these articles. I simply citing all these references to show that indeed, there are many researches behind the so call OPC or oligomeric proanthocyanidin.
You can find out more info on OPC in Dr. Richard A. Passwater’s book, Live Better, Longer. In the book, Dr. Passwater dedicated Chapter 3 for example to talk about Reducing the Risk of Cancer. I’m glad that more info on the effect of free radicals to our human body and how the natural supplements such as OPC-3 is helping body to fight against the free radicals are out there, and more and more main stream medical authorities are looking for alternative treatment as described in AARP’s article cited above. While the article didn’t particularly mention about the use of OPC-3, however, it says and I quote:
One recent study by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (which uses integrated treatments for each of the 16,000 patients who enter its doors each year) found that, after six months, 65 percent of pancreatic cancer patients receiving integrated care—in this case a combination of therapies that included taking green tea extract, melatonin, and high-potency vitamins—reported manageable pain, as opposed to 22 percent of patients who were not receiving integrated care. And more than a third of these patients reported lower levels of fatigue. According to another study, presented at last year’s meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, patients with stage-three pancreatic cancer who received a range of alternative therapies along with aggressive chemotherapy had a median survival rate nearly double (76 weeks) that for similar patients who received the conventional chemotherapy treatment alone.
Personally, for a long time I had been bothered by seasonal allergy during seasonal changes. However, since I took the OPC-3 four years ago, I’ve been off from allergy medications, and free from chronic sniffing all day long. Doctors at my work place as well as my family doctor have also seen the drop in my cholesterol level over the past 4 years. So if you’re like me and you’re looking for information on how to prevent cancer, the article and the book seems to be references that you don’t want to ignore.
