Saman Dance

I was looking for some Indonesian related videos in Youtube and to my surprise, I came across this ‘Tari Saman’ video or Saman Dance that was listed in number 4 on that list. Once I clicked on that video, there are some 30 other titles related to Saman Dance alone showed up. I simply pick this one for my cyber friend Saman Sadaghi. This was the great work of Indonesian Students in Sendai, Japan. Enjoy!

To all my other cyber friends, please check some of the Balinese Dances in youtube such as the Kecak Dance or this Puspanjali Dance if you enjoy this sychronized motions type dances. Have a good weekend!

Honestly, I don’t know the meaning but I have friends name Samana too when I grew up. There is a recentl popular novel with a title ‘Saman’ there, and it turned out the title came from the alias of the male character in the novel. Someone sent me a copy two three years ago, but haven’t had a chance to read it. I don’t know if the word Saman means anything in local Acehnese language. But Aceh was also known as Serambi Mekah or the Veranda of Mecca. Just curious if there is any influence of Persian or Arabic language there. May be some of my Acehnese visitors if any could explain it to you.
Also, there is an explanation about Saman Dance and Aceh in general at this site:

There is some additional info about this dance of thousand hands. I got it from this blog:

In the past, Saman dance was normally performed to celebrate noble occasions, as well as to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad. In fact, the name “Saman” came after Syech Saman, a great religious leader in the region. Nowadays, the dance is usually performed at the beginning of importants festivals and gatherings.
