My first trial…..

Last night I set my alarm clock and was able to wake up at 5:40AM this morning. There were an Iridium Flare of Iridium 26 at 05:54:57 and ISS passing around 06:00:00. The sky was cloudy but I thought I would be able to see the passing of ISS since I saw few stars and the crescent moon. I gave up the effort to see the Iridium 26, since the altitude was only 16 degree. It was too low and it was blocked by the trees on the hill. However, the good part from last night surfing the Sky & Telescope site was the phone number of Master Clock of U.S. Naval Observatory I got from one of the articles. By calling that number, i.e., 1-202-762-1401, I was able to get accurate time to match the predicted time I got from Heavens-above.

I then set my old Sony Mavica 95 on a tripod at my drive way. When I turned it on, the aperture setting was still at f/2.8. I only need to set the shutter speed. The only trouble was, I didn’t fasten the tripod screws correctly and for an 8 seconds shot, the vibration when I pushed the button caused the camera to move. There was not enough time to readjust the tripod screws and I was unable to get my first shot.

After seeing the ISS disappeared in the cloud for some 15 to 20 seconds, I then tried to take the picture of the crescent moon, but what I got was a blurry image.

Lesson learned, :-) and that was the reason to look for a new camera, even though I thought there are more to learn for using this old camera. For example from the file property I noticed that the ISO speed ratting was only 80.

Until this evening, I still haven’t found the information on how to register or how to get the COSPAR site number. However, I would like to add that in Jeff’s note, there is a section describing the existing standard time signals and various time services of US Naval Laboratory. I need to check those links, since one of the link to run the UTC in your computer stated that it could only be run using Netscape. I haven’t played around with it yet.
