Import Export Features of WordPress

After 18 months finally I could move all the postings from my original blog to this site.

When I started blogging, I used the blogging tool provided by my host. Even though it was using WordPress, I was told then that I didn’t have access to database and all my wp-* folders. I knew little about WP at that time, but when I realized that I didn’t have any control over my files as what my service provider had told me, I then moved to this new site and installed my own WordPress. However, since I like most of my original postings, I then keep my old blog there until now. As time goes by, my interest has shifted away from my hobby on satellite tracking, and I’ve concentrated more and more on health and nutrition topics. That’s why I was thinking on how to put the information on Satellite Tracking back to that site and remove all the pages at the navigation tabs related to satellite tracking on this site. Of course I need to have my own WordPress there but it’s not a big deal for me now, even though I’m still lazy to read the php tutorial book. :-)

Last night, while I was cleaning up the navigation tabs on top of this page, and trying to move the search-bar of Mistylook template from top right corner down to the sidebar, I had had a good email exchanges with Andrew of Geeky Weekly. (Andrew was very helpful. After I posted a question on his blog, he wrote me back and taught me few things that really alleviated my pain in editing those php files.) Andrew suggested me to check the WP backup plugin, but I’ve just using the WPAU few days ago. Anyway, it was during the time while surfing the WP Backup plugin site, saw the admin panel picture, I went back to my admin panel and gave another look at the Import/Export features of WP. This is what I saw on Manage>Import tab:

If you have posts or comments in another system, WordPress can import those into this blog. To get started, choose a system to import from below:

………

WordPress Import posts, comments, custom fields, pages, and categories from a WordPress export file.

OK. The first thing I did this morning was to log on to my old blog. They are still using WP 2.x version but the Export Feature was there. I then clicked on Export button, followed the instructions, and downloaded the XML file into my desktop.

Next, from the Admin panel of this site:

  • I went to click on Manage > Import,
  • browsed my desktop,
  • selected the XML file I’ve just downloaded,
  • clicked on “Upload file and Import” button, and voila!

I got all 14 files and all the comments up here. Wasn’t that simple?

The only thing I need to do after that was to clean up the navigation tabs. Since both sites have almost the same navigation tabs, after I imported those files, the navigation tabs from the old blog also populated the tabs on top of the page. I then simply edited each page from the old blog, and instead of deleting them, I just clicked to check the ‘Keep this post private’ button on the right sidebar and that’s it. All the old files from the old blog were integrated to this new blog seamlessly.

Thanks to Andrew Charlton and Sadish of WordPress Rock that have helped me by answering all the questions that have bothered me while I was cleaning up my site. Sadish is right, WordPress Rock! :-)
