Attention Deficit Disorder

While talking to a friend about the Attention Deficit Disorder* (ADD), I remembered that Dr. Richard A. Passwater has included a chapter on “Treating Attention Deficit Disorder” in his book, so I lent him the copy of Dr. Passwater’s book of mine. I also remembered seeing this video clip showing the use of vitamin B-12 to help an ADD boy so I told him that I’d find the link for him, and here we are:
In that particular chapter mentioned above, Dr. Passwater wrote that he often received report on how pycnogenol helps this or that, but these “studies of one” are considered as anecdotal reports and have little scientific value. He further wrote:
But, when you get enough smoke, you begin looking for the fire.
That’s the reason I put this video here. Hopefully after watching this video clip you may go to find where the fire is by doing your own search on the Internet. For example, I just went to pubmed site, searched for “pyconogenol attention deficit disorder” and found 7 references there, with more links that can be reached from each individual link there. I think you will be able to find these references if you click the link above. However, the most important thing after finding them is talking to your doctor or the pediatrician of your child about your finding. But please don’t be surprised if they will simply dismiss or ridicule the idea. I was reading this review following one of the link from pubmed site and found the following statement:
“No systematic data regarding AD/HD efficacy could be found for hypericum, Gingko biloba, Calmplex, Defendol, or pycnogenol.”
This was based on a research published in 2002. However, from the same pubmed site, I also found the following abstract that was published is 2006:
Results show that 1-month Pycnogenol administration caused a significant reduction of hyperactivity, improves attention and visual-motoric coordination and concentration of children with ADHD. In the placebo group no positive effects were found. One month after termination of Pycnogenol administration a relapse of symptoms was noted. Our results point to an option to use Pycnogenol as a natural supplement to relieve ADHD symptoms of children.
These results reminded me the story that Louis Pasteur was ridiculed for his germ theory of disease. So please talk to your doctor and use your own judgment. I hope that will affect the treatment of your love one to a more positive result.
